Bioengineering and evolution

Bioengineering and the evolution of new function is a major activity within the Centre. This encompasses laboratory evolution through use and development of fully integrated robotics platforms for high throughput mutagenesis, protein handling, assay development and screens. The Centre also has expertise in knowledge-based ‘rational’ design, through structural modeling, directed mutagenesis and functional analysis. Work is supported by expertise in computational modeling and theory, structural biology and spectroscopy. The Centre exploits and designs semi-synthetic systems, employing expertise in chemical biology and protein engineering. Bioengineering is supported by an extensive suite of analytical instruments, including GC-MS, LC-MS and NMR.
